TELLING EXTENDED FAMILY MEMBERS AND FAMILY FRIENDS

There are usually many people beyond the parents and children who are affected by a divorce or separation. These caring relatives and friends can help and offer support to you and our children during the family transition. Sometimes, however, their involvement can make things more difficult. They may choose sides or increase the conflict between the parents, often through their well-intentioned support. It is important that you educate the people who are involved with your family about your intentions to minimize the conflict with your children's other parent and keep your children's best interests at the center of your decisions. You may choose to do this through a conversation by inviting those involved with our family to attend this class or through a letter. The following letter is an example you can use to help your well meaning family members understand how they can best help during this difficult time.
